C-Section vs Vaginal birth/VBAC : This can be a touchy topic among the crunchy mom community, because everyone seems to be all about the VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). Even when I mentioned that I wanted a repeat cesarean to my midwife, she looked at me confused and I don’t know if she fully understood.
Why would I want to go through surgery when a vaginal birth was an option? A few reasons…
- I’ve had 2 previous c-sections and have always recovered quickly and pretty pain free from all of them, so I was confident that this time would be the same.
- The doctor that was going to deliver our third baby is the same doctor that delivered our second and we had a magical experience then. You can read that birth story blog HERE. I knew that he would take care of us again.
- We don’t have family close to us or friends around and both of my previous labors were long (41 hours and 24 hours). We didn’t want our older girls to have to stay in the hospital for days and we didn’t have anyone around to stay with them at home, especially if I went into labor at night (which I always do).
- I knew that my doctor would let me take the lead when it came to delivery and I wanted to go into labor naturally and feel labor pains etc, but not necessarily push. Yes, I’m aware that it sounds strange. If I had a different doctor, I would have gotten rushed into surgery and not given the option to labor how I wanted.
- Side note : my water broke before the OR was even ready for me and I still wonder if I could have pushed relatively sooner than surgery. The world will never know.
Those are a few reasons on why I chose a c-section delivery for our third baby. I’m not a medical professional, this is just what works for our family. Always do your own research and ask your medical provider for facts and data. Don’t ever let anyone talk you into doing something that you don’t know much about.
