I realized that I share a lot of vegan recipes and vegan restaurants but I’ve never really shared how I became a vegan and what helped me in the beginning. So, here we are.
I first started watching documentaries like Food, Inc and I was appalled. I decided, as I was watching that documentary, that I would no longer support an industry that raped bulls to acquire their semen to then rape cows to implant the semen and then rip the calves away from the mom after they were born, killing them and all to keep the mom producing milk for human consumption. Milk that is extracted from the cows’ udders with machines that hurt the cows and create ulcers on their udders, which also develop pus pockets that seep into the milk and even pasteurizing that milk doesn’t kill off the bacteria from the pus. Pus. Or an industry that throws baby roosters in a shredder after cutting off their beaks, only because they can’t produce eggs.
The first book that I read was Skinny Bitch and it’s an amazing book for the newbie vegan woman, in my opinion. After that was The Kind Diet and I loved how simple Alicia Silverstone made it to comprehend. I later used her book The Kind Mama to continue my journey into pregnancy.
YouTube was a big help as well with channels like Pick Up Limes and Avant-Garde Vegan, who make the recipe and cooking process not as daunting as I thought it would be. I will say that when I first became vegan in 2010, my go to’s were processed vegan foods and anything that I could find in the store that looked easy. I was a flight attendant and I needed quick and easy foods to take with me on the road and it just became easier for me to eat like that when I was home too. I’ve never been a chef but now, I can follow a recipe like a champ!
It was hard in the beginning for sure, but sticking with it and getting creative to pass that first hump it will get easier from there. Thankfully in 2020 we have so many more resources to pull from and so many great products out there that sometimes even surprises me! For example, there’s a product out there called Just Egg that you can actually make an omelette with! I’m blown away every single time.
Whatever your reason is for being vegan or if you’re not even wanting to go vegan but you’re still reading about it here with me, thank you. The baby roosters thank you.
