I never thought I would be a soccer mom, yet here I am, elbow-deep in shin guards and soccer balls. When we had our first game, I had no idea what I needed to bring, what I needed to do, or what I should wear. I looked on Pinterest, and Google, and asked my non-soccer mom friends who had no idea either. So I’m giving you the blog post I was looking for as a first-time soccer mom.
First-Time Soccer Mom Tips
What to buy for your soccer player
Whatever league you join, they will tell you the required items for your first-time soccer player, and it varies. These are the usuals:
- Soccer ball (make sure to note the size your player needs)
- Cleats
- Shin Guards
- Water Bottle
I noticed that some of the teams had goalie gloves, which wasn’t required but our girls felt they helped.
What to bring to a first-time soccer game
I’d first recommend purchasing an excellent outdoor Chair with a canopy. That sun is brutal in the south and I need all the shade I can get. Speaking of the sun, just because you’re not the one playing doesn’t mean that you don’t need hydration. Don’t forget a water bottle for yourself and any other littles you might have with you that aren’t playing. This might go without saying, but don’t forget the sunscreen! We try to stay as “clean” as possible with sunscreen because of the toxins, but if you are in a pinch PLEASE try to stay away from anything that has Benzene and Oxybenzone in the ingredient list. My friend Nicole sums up why, in this TikTok video.
If you’re not into the outdoor chair, a picnic blanket is your next bet, especially if your kid plays multiple games. I prefer this one because it folds nicely into its own carrying pouch, is waterproof, and is great for a baby.
Recently I jumped on the camping fan bandwagon when it’s exceptionally scolding hot in Georgia, and I’ve never looked back. Our youngest doesn’t play yet so she sits on the sidelines and basks in the sun with the camping fan and a few of her favorite toys and coloring books are usually a hit.
Fashion Game for a Soccer Game
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I believe that fashion is wellness and I will perpetually be overdressed for any occasion and a soccer game is no exception. I know that everyone doesn’t feel the same way, but if you want to avoid looking frumpy here are some ideas.
A tennis dress is an easy off-and-on option that serves as form and function, however, the potty situation on the field is usually a porta-potty and that’s a pretty terrible situation when you have to take everything off and be completely naked in a hot box. Nobody wants that.
Another good bet is an athletic skort and bodysuit or a tee. Functional and cute and you don’t have to worry about the porta-potty. Win-win.
I love jean shorts and a body suit with a sun hat because Georgia’s sun doesn’t play. Pair that with that canopy chair and the camping fan and I’m a happy girl. Can you tell that I’m not a fan of the heat?
You’ll inevitably be playing in the rain (or after when the fields are gross) at some point, so rain boots are a must. I have 3 daughters so we have matching boots, obviously, but there are plenty of cute options out there.
